Update #10 - Return to work Monday, Oct. 6th
Wednesday, October 01, 2008 12:07 PM

Return to work: Great news! We can return to work on Monday, Oct. 6th. We will resume normal working hours at that time. Please bring bottled water with you since I am not sure that the water is ready to drink, and bring a sandwich or something for lunch since some of our usual eating establishments may not be open. Mike Shriner is trying to get one elevator up and running, but, if not, you may wish be wear comfortable shoes and pace yourselves on the stairs. The nursing sim lab floors were damaged, and these labs will temporarily be housed in our cafeteria where the tables are. The first floor is dusty and still under repair, but floors 2-4 are OK. Power, water, telephones, internet, fire alarms, and working toilets have been restored. There has been rapid progress. Our clean-up crew under the capable leadership of Mr. Willie Rogers has worked tirelessly. Hopefully, they will still be there so that each of you can personally thank them. If not, I have been supplying them with cookies and donuts during my visits.

Mail: Our mountain of mail is sorted, and in the admin building. Without a working elevator, we may have to work on a plan for distribution. More later today on this.

Students: We have heard from all but 4 of our students. A plan to house displaced students should be finalized soon. Many classes resumed this week on line and face-to-face in alternate locations. The PAS students will be meeting for class beginning Monday, Oct. 6th. Our plan is to resume classes in our building Oct. 13th.

Faculty and staff: Many of our faculty and staff have reached out to others in need of temporary housing. You have our eternal gratitude. If others still need temporary housing, please do not hesitate to let us know. Please check with your supervisor about any other needs. Thanks to Ed Woods & Leti Ford for seeing to payroll reports. For those on biweekly payrolls, the amount will be the same as the period before the storm. See the UTMB webpage for paycheck distribution information. We hope that everyone is well and in full recovery mode. we will plan a town meeting once we get our bearings.

Be safe and be strong.

Message to Parents and Families

Dear UTMB SAHS Parents and Families,

We have heard from many of you inquiring about the status of our programs. We have had regular emails and updates to students, faculty, and staff throughout the last 2 ½ weeks. We have been in contact with all but a few of our students as well. The safety of those in our school was our first concern, and now we are focusing on continuing our educational programs for our students. Identifying student housing is a top priority for the campus, and we should have some solutions very soon. Many courses have already resumed on-line or face-to-face in alternate locations. Labs will be delayed until we can return to our building, and we will be extending the length of the semester to cover any classwork that was missed. Those on clinical rotations have had little interruption of these experiences or, if they were assigned to a clinic impacted by the storm, they were or are being reassigned. Students graduating in December should be able to complete their requirements in order to graduate on time. Our students have been phenomenal during this time. They have reached out to one another, and displayed the professionalism required of health providers. If you have other questions, please contact Mr. Ray Lewis, Associate Dean of Admissions and Student Affairs at ralewis@utmb.edu.

Message to SAHS Alumni and Supporters

Dear UTMB SAHS Alums and Supporters

The students, faculty, and staff are in rapid recovery after Hurricane Ike. We did have some water damage in the first floor of our building which is being cleaned up, but our power, water, and air conditioning have been restored. Return to our building is pending the restoration of the fire alarms and clearance from Environmental Safety. Many of our students, faculty, and staff have also had damage to their residences. Many students lost significant personal items such as clothes, books, and computers. If you would like to make a donation to the recovery fund please go to the UTMB Hurricane Recovery Fund http://www.utmb.edu/hurricane_fund.asp. If you want to direct your donation to students in a particular program, simply designate the program and indicate for students on your check. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Identifying student housing is a top priority for the campus, and we should have some solutions very soon. Many courses have already resumed on-line or face-to-face in alternate locations. Labs will be delayed until we can return to our building, and we will be extending the length of the semester to cover any classwork that was missed. We have decided to postpone our 40th Anniversary celebration originally scheduled of November 15th. We will let you know more later. Thanks to the many alums who reached out and offered support during this difficulty period. We are resilient and displaying a wonderful UTMB community spirit. If you have other questions, please contact Michelle Conley at maconley@UTMB.EDU.

Financial aid was distributed to those that use direct deposit. Housing (alternative) UTMB is working on a mass housing solution for those who have no place to live. We will report more here as new information arrives. Many students are already buddying up in the meantime.  We are in the process of determining how many students would need temporary housing, and researching our options. Please file with FEMA at www.FEMA.gov if you have not done so already, and please make use of the information posted on this site from local real estate companies http://www.utmb.edu/news/housing.asp.
