July 2008  
UTMB Rehabilitation Sciences PhD Curriculum, offered through the graduate program in Preventive Medicine and Community Health, was ranked 8th among a group of Kinesiology, exercise science, and rehabilitation programs.  Rankings of top research universities are published by the Chronicle of Higher Education and based on faculty scholarly productivity.  
   
June 2008  
Steven Fisher successfully defended his dissertation entitled, "In Hospital Functional Assessments in the Elderly and Their Association to Post Discharge Health Outcomes," on June 24th. 
   
April 2008  
Betty Abreu, Director of Occupational Therapy at the Transitional Learning Center, received the distinguished A. Jean Ayres award from the American Occupational Therapy Association in recognition of exemplary contributions to scholarship in practice, education, and research.

Betty Protas, Dean of Allied Health Sciences, was elected as a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association to recognize her significant contributions to the education, science and practice of physical therapy.  She'll be presented with the award at the annual APTA conference in San Antonio in June.

Dissertation findings - Former student, John DeWitt, publishes findings from dissertation research on effect of inertia in the Journal of Experimental Biology.  Dr. DeWitt received his PhD from UTMB in 2006 and works at NASA - Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX.  http://jeb.biologists.org/content/vol211/issue7/.
