Douglas Paddon-Jones published Artificial gravity can prevent muscle loss in space in the Journal of Applied Physiology, a UTMB team led by associate professor Douglas Paddon-Jones describes their success using a NASA human centrifuge to fight the muscle-wasting effects of weightlessness. Working with volunteers kept in bed for three weeks to simulate zero-gravity conditions, they found that just one hour a day on the centrifuge was sufficient to restore normal muscle protein synthesis. Barbara Doucet for her received funding through Moody Endowment Board of Galveston approved funding "A Chronic Stroke Recovery Program for Skilled Nursing Residents." The purpose of the grant is to examine the effects of using neuromuscular electrical stimulation in combination with task-oriented training to facilitate improved upper extremity motor skills in this population. Additionally, to investigate whether these improved motor skills can translate to greater functional abilities, positive emotional state, and a reduced need for caregivers. (Posted July '09) Saad Bindawas is the recipient of the Section on Geriatrics cultural diversity poster award. He has plans to submit his abstract in the September issue of GeriNotes the Sections Clinical Magazine. (Posted July 09)

Kurt Mossberg has been selected the 2009 recipient of the Jack Walker Award by the APTA. The Award is being made based on an article published in Physical Therapy -- “Cardiorespiratory Capacity After Weight-Supported Treadmill Training in Patients With Traumatic Brain Injury.” (Posted March 09)
Kurt Mossberg has been invited to participate in a consortium with the CDC, DoD, VA, and NIH to produce a report to Congress on TBI in the military. Dr. Mossberg is the principal investigator for an NIH R01 examining body weight supported treadmill training in persons with traumatic brain injury. (Posted January '09)
UTMB’s School of Allied Health Sciences was ranked in the top 10 out of U.S. schools of allied health in terms of NIH funded research in 2007. (Posted October 2008) UTMB Rehabilitation Sciences PhD Curriculum, offered through the graduate program in Preventive Medicine and Community Health, was ranked 8th among a group of Kinesiology, exercise science, and rehabilitation programs. Rankings of top research universities are published by the Chronicle of Higher Education and based on faculty scholarly productivity.
