ASSIGNMENT ONE - Literature Search
The first four weeks of class will empower you to do Assignment One, which focuses on doing a computer-based literature search and writing critiques of research articles.

Readings are listed in Step 1 of Assignment 1. Review how to use the web browser of your choice (Novell Netscape, Microsoft Internet Explorer, or other web browser). There are no text books to purchase.

Assignment 1, Part 1 - Due on, or before, Wednesday, Sept 19 by 6 PM. Send in a draft topic sentence describing the research question upon which you plan to base your literature search. E-mail it to Bruce Niebuhr Note: You must have your draft topic sentence critiqued by the other members of the class before turning the final version in to your instructor. Use the email list on the NOTICES page to send your draft to everyone.

Assignment 1, Part 2 - Due on, or before, Wednesday,  Sep 26 by 6 PM. Write a practice critique based on the article described in Assignment 1 Step 3.

Literature Search
 Assignment 1, Part 3 - Final topic sentence, literature search, and final critique due on, or before, Wednesday, Oct 3 by 6 PM.
Remember: Everyone must write their final critique on a unique article, and this uniqueness extends across multiple years, so students from last year are still in the data base and their articles are also off limits. Any duplicated articles will mean locating another article and doing another critique. Be sure to confirm your article by following the directions on the Assignment One Part 3 page.

ASSIGNMENT TWO - How to Interpret Data and Basic Statistical Concepts

Four weeks will be devoted to a basic overview of statistical concepts and how to assess "what the data mean." 

When discussing this assignment, we will use this study as an example: Vallbona, Carlos et al., Response of pain to static magnetic fields in postpolio patients, a double blind pilot study. Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, 78, 1200-1203. This study is on-line. Click on the hot link.

ASSIGNMENT THREE - Writing the Literature Review

Four weeks will be devoted to developing a review of the literature and the concepts of synthesizing research findings.

This week take a look at systematic reviews from the Cochrane Library. This LINK will take you to the UTMB Library database page. Click on the entery titled "Cochrane Library. You MUST be at a computer on the UTMB campus to access the Cochrane Library, or logged on to the UTMB network from your dial-up/broadband link at home. Once at the site, click on Cochrane Reviews. Look at the reviews listed for Assignment 3 in the Readings.

iASSIGNMENT FOUR - Ethics in Research.

The last part of the course will be devoted to the final assignment.

Assignment 4 - You must be done with Assignment 4 by Wednesday, August 8 at 6:00 PM. This assignment consists of the readings and an on-line course in the protection of human subjects. Once you pass your certification test, email your certificate to your instructor. You may want to get this assignment done early.
