The Department of Clinical Laboratory Science is pleased to announce the formation of a new collaborative program with El Centro College in Dallas.
Students enrolled in the MLT-to-MT or “LEAP” distance track will be able to attend laboratory sessions in downtown Dallas, at El Centro College, a campus of the Dallas County Community College District. UTMB’s proven LEAP distance program provides a means for graduates of Medical Laboratory Technician programs to advance their education while remaining in the laboratory workforce. Students receive lecture content electronically via streaming video and the Blackboard ® education platform. Two to three condensed “laboratory weekends” are scheduled during each semester for distance learners. Graduates of the LEAP program earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science and are immediately eligible for MT(ASCP) and CLS(NCA) certification.
UTMB faculty member John Wentz will coordinate the El Centro College/ UTMB alliance, along with Lisa Lock – Program Director of the El Centro Medical Laboratory Technology Program. “El Centro’s MLT program has maintained high standards for students throughout it’s history and is strategically located in the center of Dallas, convenient to public rail and bus transportation. This program will be an opportunity for MLT’s in North Texas to advance their careers and keep their current jobs, something that has not been available in the Dallas area,” said Wentz.
