Categorical Certification

Professionals who wish to enter or advance in the field of CLS may apply for admission to our categorical certification program. We offer categorical certification programs in Chemistry, Hematology, Immunohematology, and Microbiology.

Upon successful completion of the certification program, the student may be eligible to sit for national categorical credentialing examinations with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Registry* or the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel, Inc. (NCA).

To be eligible, applicants must have earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and have completed 36 semester hours in the biological, chemical, and/or medical sciences, in addition to or part of the bachelor?s degree (these courses should include human physiology, one year of general chemistry, basic immunology, etc.). Applicants must be able to attend student labs on campus in Galveston or other collaborative program. Student labs are scheduled during the day time Monday through Friday.

To apply, complete an online application for the Categorical Certification Program and submit your official transcripts for proof of prerequisite completion. The cost of the Categorical Cerfification Program is based on course credit hours. The cost for each credit hour is $250.00.

All application materials must be received no later than:

  • July 1 for Fall semester
  • Dec 1 for Spring semester
  • Apr 1 for Summer semester
